Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission has been selected by AEC Cares to receive $50,000 in renovations for its residential quarters in a volunteer/driven “blitz build.”

September 14, 2021 (Philadelphia) – Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission, the second oldest rescue mission serving people experiencing homelessness in the country, announced today that they have been selected by AEC Cares for a blitz build to redesign their 4th-floor, home to their senior level program. Sunday Breakfast was selected as the recipient of the blitz build at this year’s American Institute of Architects (AIA) conference. AEC Cares is investing $50,000 for the renovations of the 4th floor, which houses up to 32 men in transitional housing at Sunday Breakfast. As the local leaders of the blitz build, The Community Design Collaborative identified the volunteer design team who planned the renovations, which will include a new ceiling, floors, furniture, paint, window treatments, and a lighting system. Additionally, The Connelley Foundation has provided a grant for the purchase of new bedroom furniture. The renovations will take place during an all-day event on September 22nd, 2021, with 75 volunteers, and are supported by Gold level sponsor Levelor, and Platinum level sponsors USG, Shaw Contract, and Norix Group Inc.

“This year’s AEC Cares project has brought together 100 volunteers that will transform the living quarters of Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission’s 4th floor.  Through gracious donations from USG, Norix, Shaw Contract, and many others, including a partnership with the Design Collaborative, we are going to revitalize this space for Philadelphia’s most underserved.  ConstructConnect is so glad to be a part of something that will leave a lasting imprint on the lives of many,” said  Derek Guffey, VP, Product Marketing, BPM, ConstructConnect, and AEC Cares Partner.

For over 143 years, Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission has been a resource in Philadelphia for those who are experiencing homelessness and hunger. The organization is the only provider of three meals a day, 365 days of the year to anyone in need in the City of Philadelphia. Since its founding by John Wanamaker, its faith-based mission is grounded in Christian values to love, to demonstrate compassion, and to empower vulnerable communities. Sunday Breakfast provides meals, shelter, showers, medical and legal resources, and many other homeless services to those in need.

“These renovations help the Mission to provide love and respect while addressing the urgent issues facing Philadelphia. Our aim is to provide stability and serve as a family for those who come through our doors. Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission is committed to serving those experiencing homelessness with dignity and compassion, and this generous upgrade will provide a space that feels like home for our residents,” said Jeremy Montgomery, President and CEO of Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission.
