Aligned Data Centers announced it broke ground on PHX-13, the first of four planned data centers at its 100-acre Glendale, Arizona, campus. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 15, and city officials and industry leaders were in attendance.

Expansion for Aligned and Glendale

PHX-13 will deliver 72 megawatts (MW) of capacity, serving hyperscale and enterprise customers. Arizona Public Service (APS) will build a new 230 kV transmission line to meet the campus’s substantial energy requirements.

Over the past ten years, the amount of electricity used by data centers in the U.S. has tripled, according to a report from the Department of Energy. According to the Data Center Energy Usage Report, this energy use is expected to double or even triple again by 2028.

The surge in power demand comes from the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and electric vehicles. AI requires more powerful computer chips and better cooling, which use more electricity.

The company said that the Glendale campus’s power is sourced from renewable energy, consistent with Aligned’s commitment to achieving zero-carbon hosting by 2040.

The company’s broader sustainability strategy includes using recyclable and low-VOC materials, reducing overall resource consumption, and maintaining transparency in environmental reporting.

Sustainable Design and Operations

Aligned’s PHX-13 site is sustainably designed. Company officials said they retained unused well rights on the property, which sits on a former rose farm. The on-site use of groundwater helps support ecological balance.

The facility will use Delta3 air cooling arrays, which remove heat directly at the source, rather than relying on traditional cold air distribution.

This approach and a closed-loop water recycling system reduce water and energy consumption.

Modular Infrastructure

PHX-13 will be built using Aligned’s Adaptive Modular Infrastructure (AMI), which uses prefabricated components manufactured off-site, then delivered to the construction site.

Modular construction allows faster deployment, scalability, and long-term flexibility than conventional on-site methods.

Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers praised the development: “In 2025, data centers are essential to the U.S. economy and future growth. This project and all its benefits are exciting for our Glendale community”.

Aligned is an infrastructure technology company that offers adaptable, build-to-scale data center solutions. The company has a data center in Phoenix and seven additional U.S. locations, as well as in Latin America and Canada.
