 KEY POINTS

  • LSU approved a $215 million project to build new South Quad dorms to house over 1,200 students, aiming to address rising enrollment and on-campus housing shortages.

  • Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2025 near the LSU Business School on South Quad Drive, replacing the Touchdown Village East commuter parking lot.

  • The project will eliminate 697 parking spaces but introduce a Mobility Hub and add 350 commuter spots elsewhere to support student transportation and reduce parking disruptions.

Louisiana State University (LSU) officials approved the construction of new dormitories valued at $215 million, the LSU Reveille reported. The project, greenlit by the LSU Board of Supervisors on Friday, will add over 1,200 beds and is scheduled to break ground in October 2025.

Location Near Business School

The new dorms will be built on South Quad Drive, next to LSU’s Business Education Complex, in what is currently the commuter parking lot known as Touchdown Village East.

Once the commercial construction project is completed, it is expected to relieve housing and parking frustrations, particularly for incoming first-year students.

Construction is expected to be completed by Fall 2027, according to project documentation reviewed by the board.

Rising Enrollment Driving Urgency

LSU is experiencing an eighth consecutive year of record-setting freshman enrollment. Interim President Matt Lee announced that the university expects to welcome approximately 8,000 new freshmen this fall, surpassing last year’s intake of 7,912 students.

Expansion Comes with Trade-Offs

The expansion project does come with trade-offs. According to the proposal, 697 parking spots will be lost, and 515 spaces will be converted to residential parking. To compensate, 350 new commuter spaces will be created at the Old Front Nine lot.

Enhancing Student Mobility

In addition to the dormitories, LSU will construct a mobility hub for its Park & Geaux shuttle program. The hub will be a climate-controlled facility with restrooms and WiFi, offering students a comfortable transfer point for campus shuttle buses.

This infrastructure is part of a broader strategy to streamline student movement and reduce congestion around the university’s core.

Developer and Construction Team

The construction will be led by RISE: A Real Estate Company, the same firm behind several of LSU’s recent residential developments, including Nicholson Apartments, Cedar Hall, and Spruce Hall.

The LSU Board approved a total budget of $215 million for the combined dormitory and mobility hub project.
