An Introduction to AI in Preconstruction

Construction Technology

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the construction industry. As we enter a new era of construction technology, it’s important to understand what Artificial Intelligence (AI) is and how it offers unique solutions to enhance the productivity and performance of construction professionals. Let’s examine how artificial intelligence is redefining the construction industry.

Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning

Artificial Intelligence is a field of computer science that develops and studies large amounts of data to mimic the way humans solve problems. The roots of AI can be traced back to the 1950s with pioneers like Arthur Samuel helping to design ways for machines to do things that humans presently do - only faster.

You may have experienced AI in Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri. Have you ever said, “Hey Siri, what’s this song?” Then you may have experienced AI in your day-to-day life.

While machine learning and artificial intelligence can often be confused for one another, the terms are not exactly equal. Machine learning works with artificial intelligence to learn from experience, adapt, and improve performance without being explicitly programmed.

Deep learning is another part of artificial intelligence that is getting a lot of exposure today. Deep learning uses artificial neural networks to process large amounts of data and solve problems with limited human help. These artificial intelligence networks are valued for their ability to handle lots of data and continue to improve as they train, learn, and solve complex issues.

Bright Future for AI in Construction

AI has finally broken ground in the construction industry following years of development. The current landscape and future of AI in the construction industry are promising as more AI-based tools and techniques become integrated into workflows. As technology advances, AI is expected to become an even more integral part of the construction process, helping to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance construction performance outcomes. While we all have our own opinions about AI in the workplace, one thing is true, AI has landed in the construction industry.

Bringing AI into Your Preconstruction Process

Ready to dive into the AI pool? Takeoff Boost is the new artificial intelligence-based add-on feature for ConstructConnect On-Screen Takeoff® that automatically counts objects and performs area and linear takeoff measurements on your architectural floorplans. Takeoff Boost is an estimating software that can perform measurements in as quickly as 30 seconds and handle up to two pages of plans at once. This gives you more time to focus on what matters most—analyzing results, perfecting pricing, and winning more bids.
